A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.....
bravo Mr. Lucas, bravo. you have restored my faith. i admit i doubted you after your two previous movies, especially after that Jar-Jar fiasco. but this movie is a return to your golden days.
for those of you who didn't know, i am working at a movie theater this summer. as such, i have the opportunity to see movies a day or so before they're released to the general public. tonight, i was given the privilege of watching the final Star Wars movie (or the third one, or whatever). what follows are my first impression. i don't wish to ruin any of your experiences with this movie, so i will try not to reveal too much about the actual plot. if i do, i truly am sorry.
1. ok, i'm gonna start with the previews, cuz they are an essential part of any movie
-Mr. and Mrs. Smith: ok, seriously, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are two of the hottest actors i know. (yeah, i said it, brad pitt is good looking. grow up) put them together, and this is a beautiful movie. they seemed to interact well too, from what i saw in the preview.
-Fantastic Four: could go either way, Spiderman good or Daredevil bad. not gonna make any predictions. ok, yes i am. it's not gonna suck quite like Daredevil, but it'll barely break even, if that.
-Chronicles of Narnia: i doubt many people ever saw the original, i think it was done by a british company. i remember it was pretty good, cept the girl playing lucy had the most horrendous buckteeth. the books were really good though, and this version looks to have potential. perhaps not Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, but still a good set of movies.
-War of the Worlds: the radio play of this used to freak me out as a kid, even though it was done in the thirties or something. unfortunately, i don't think this movie will do the same. it has star power in Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning, but i just think it's gonna fall, and fall hard. don't really have a good reason, just a hunch.
-Herbie: Fully Loaded: is it cynical of me to think the only reason anyone will go see this movie is the fact that Lindsay Lohan is in it?
-Lords of Dogtown: based loosely on a documentary with basically the same title, this one looks like a winner. i never saw the documentary, but i wanted to, it was supposed to be good, and this movie looks like it keeps that small budget, substance over style, home movie sort of look. maybe not a blockbuster, but i think this'll do pretty good, maybe be a kind of cult movie for skateboarders, teens who think they're cool, that sorta thing.
2. George Lucas is still the master of special effects.
3. The guy playing Palpatine does a really good job.
4. Ewan MacGregor looks much better without a beard. he can't quite pull off the manly man look. that doesn't mean he isn't still a great actor, i just don't like his beard.
5. Natalie Portman, you're hot, but you were much better in Garden State.
5a. her costumes are still stupid looking. i mean, seriously, who wears pearls to sleep?
6. Hayden Christensen really does look evil. seriously, his eyes? scary. and he does a good job of playing a confused Anakin Skywalker going over to the dark side. i think he does the best acting job of the movie.
7. Sam Jackson kicks ass.
8. Sometimes George tries to hard to connect this movie with the originals. i mean, Yoda knowing Chewbacca? come on.
9. The scene where the Jedi are betrayed is one of the best done i've seen in a while. the music, the action, it just works.
10. They should have explained the whole Anakin bringing balance to the Force prophecy better. i don't think it's that essential part of the movie, but if you're going to bring it up, make sure it makes sense.
11. Darth Vader's breathing is still creepy.
12. Don't worry Yoda, you're still cool in my book. The emperor cheats anyway.
13. Luke and Leia. those names sound familiar for some reason.
14. I can't wait for the next movie. yeah, yeah, i know he said he wasn't going to make one, but I bet he caves.
